Operation of cage and rack washers, tunnel-type cage washers, conventional and pass-through autoclaves and other allied equipment.

Description of Job Duties

Function: To provide for the care of experimental animals with primary emphasis placed on minimizing experimental variables relating to animal health and sanitation.

Scope: Responsible for the care and cleaning of equipment and facilities along with the care and observation of the animals.

Typical Duties:
1. Provide daily husbandry of laboratory animals to include observation of animals, handling and restraint, feeding and watering, changing cages/racks, and sanitizing animals quarters and equipment in compliance with Federal regulations.

2. Assists in performing necropsies and prepares animals for surgery.

3. Provides daily record keeping for animals, room environments, and
consumable supplies. Assists in preparing reports.

4. Prepares and uses disinfectants and detergents; mixes medications
according to specific instructions; and administers measured amount of
laboratory diet to a variety of animal species.

5. Closely observes animal behavior; applies identification on various
species; obtains laboratory samples from newly arrived animals for
parasitic and bacterial analysis; and transports animals, bulk feed and
bedding material within the facility.

6. Performs maintenance and repair of existing equipment.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.
